THE SANDBERG SERIES #09  December 9 uitverkocht  - 13 januari nog kaarten beschikbaar

‘The Sandberg series’ is an ongoing lecture series initiated by the Master of Fine Arts program of the Sandberg Institute in collaboration with Theater de Roode Bioscoop in Amsterdam.  The series directly corresponds with the structure of the program, which explores the idea of  ‘autonomy’ and ‘making’ while simultaneously addressing the social and economical roles and implications of these traditional parameters of art production. The program is structured around custom modules that investigate the realms of language, image, object and performance production and representation.

The ninth in the lecture series includes presentations and performances by Isla Leaver-Yap, Isabel Lewis, Tino Sehgal and Karl Holmqvist

Isla Leaver-Yap
26 October, 19.30h
Isla Leaver-Yap is an independent curator and scholar who works with artists to produce essays, books, exhibitions, and events. She currently is the Bentson Visiting Film Scholar at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and recently produced the second edition of the Artists Moving Image Festival at Tramway Glasgow. In New York, Leaver-Yap was a guest curator of the exhibition series Short Stories at SculptureCenter. She previously worked at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, where she co-organized the ICA’s landmark exhibition season, Nought to Sixty and founded the ongoing Artists Film Club series. She recently moved from Brooklyn to Glasgow, where she is currently guest editing the forthcoming issue of Maria Fusco’s art writing journal, The Happy Hypocrite.

Tino Sehgal
9 December, 19.30h
Born in London in 1976, the Berlin-based artist Tino Sehgal constructs situations that challenge conventional art-and-spectator relationships, focusing on the fleeting gestures and social subtleties of lived experience rather than on material objects. Sehgal's practice has been shaped by his formative studies in dance and economics, and uses the museum and related institutions—galleries, art fairs, and private collections—as its arena. He considers visual art to be a microcosm of our economic reality, as both center on the production of goods and their subsequent circulation.

Karl Holmqvist
13 January, 19.30h
Swedish artist Karl Holmqvist blends poetry and pop music through cut-ups based on the similar structuring of both forms of composition. His texts, composed of anecdotes as famous as they are diverse, seem to be streams of consciousness in which one can trace Gertrude Stein and Chicks on Speed, William Blake and the Rolling Stones. Investigating the transformative potentials of language, Holmqvist believes in the act of listening as a counter balance to the more isolating and authoritative qualities of the written word.
